Cultivation, Food and Ingredients in Focus

Welcome to the Garden at Salthamn, a place on Gotland where we combine permaculture and organic farming to create sustainable and self-sufficient solutions. Here you can experience how we grow, harvest, and use local ingredients to promote a healthy lifestyle and a greener society

Soil Health and Sustainable Cultivation

Being part of the whole is central to us. That’s why we work with the entire process from soil to table – from sowing seeds in the spring, preparing the soil for the growing season, planting and harvesting – to serving fresh vegetables directly from our own gardens.

However, we don’t see ourselves as growers of vegetables, fruit, and berries – it is the soil that grows them. Our task is to care for the soil. That’s why we say: we cultivate the soil, and the soil cultivates the food.

To promote soil health, we work with composting food waste, using hand tools in the kitchen garden, as well as methods like no-dig and mulching.

No-Dig and Mulching for Sustainable Harvests

No-dig means that we don’t dig into the soil – this protects microorganisms, worms, and fungi that help build nutrient-rich and living soil.

Mulching means we keep the soil covered with organic material, mainly hay from our own grassland cultivation. This provides several benefits:

– Nutrients for the soil through the breakdown of the material
– Reduced weed growth
– Better moisture retention in the ground

We believe that healthy soil produces healthy harvests, and we are proud of our responsibility to promote a living and sustainable ecosystem.

We use no chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers. We follow the principles of organic farming, but we are not certified – instead, we are transparent and welcome guests to experience, observe, and ask questions about our methods.

Sustainability at Salthamn – Organic Lifestyle on Gotland

At Salthamn, we strive to live in harmony with nature and promote a sustainable lifestyle. By observing and learning from the Gotlandic nature, we integrate solutions that benefit both the environment and people.

Humans as a Part of
Nature

We see humans as an integrated part of nature. When nature thrives, so do we. That’s why we continuously work to implement solutions that mimic nature’s cycles, with a focus on biodiversity, self-sufficiency, and health.

Irrigation Ponds – Sustainable Water Supply

Gotland’s water resources are limited. To support biodiversity and improve water supply, we have, with support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, created two irrigation ponds covering 1.32 hectares. These ponds provide habitats for birds, wildlife, and endangered plant species, while also helping to reduce nutrient pollution in the Baltic Sea.

Vision, Design and Collaboration

Our vision is to create a place where sustainability, human connection, and genuine Gotlandic experiences are at the center. Through regenerative farming and permaculture design, we work toward this goal. We collaborate with local farmers, producers, and enthusiasts to promote knowledge sharing and a sense of community.

WWOOF on Gotland

Organic Farming and Sustainable Living at Salthamn

Here, on the beautiful limestone island of Gotland, the idea of a sustainable life in harmony with nature was born. It was here that Jacqueline Raymond, founder of Salthamn, as a child discovered the riches of the forest, meadows, and sea – a wild pantry that still inspires everything we do today.

Salthamn is now undergoing an organic transformation from an old mink farm to a place for regenerative agriculture and permaculture. We actively work to become self-sufficient through organic cultivation, nature restoration, and sustainable methods.

As a WWOOF host on Gotland, we welcome volunteers to participate in our daily work with cultivation, harvesting, and garden projects. It’s a chance to truly learn about permaculture and sustainable living.

Beyond farming, we also operate within sustainable tourism – with a restaurant, weddings, events, and meal experiences in a unique environment. Our menus follow the rhythm of the seasons and are based on ingredients from our own organic gardens.
